Review: Horton's Seafood(TV Diner)
It’s a family affair at Horton’s Seafood in East Providence, Rhode Island, with the third generation of the Horton family now serving what just might be the best “clam shack” type food in the state. And they’re not even on the water!
The minute you walk in, a member of the Horton clan greets you and gets you seated in the no-frills dining room that gives you a great view of the open kitchen. It all started here in 1945, and it just gets better and better. The owner must be a car buff because the walls are covered --- and we mean covered --- with classic car models and memorabilia.
Rhode Island is known for its unique take on seafood, and Horton’s is THE place to go for such dishes. For instance, you just have to try their award-winning Stuffed Quahog (pronounced KO-HOG), a large clam shell packed full with a mound of secret ingredients. It’s sort of like Clams Casino on steroids and just delicious! And if you order the Chowder and Clam Cakes, make sure you ask for the clear variety --- that’s the way Rhode Islanders like their chowder.
By the time you get to the main course, you’ll be hearing ocean waves pounding the shoreline. This place is known for their Fish & Chip, as Rhode Islanders are known to say it. The fish is delicately battered and then fried just until golden. And the Fried Oysters are to die for! An absolute bargain is the generous Seafood Platter with its large piece of fish and plenty of scallops, shrimp and clams, all fried to perfection. Even the cole slaw here is above average. But we do have to admit that we have had better fries in our travels.
If you have room for dessert, and that’s very iffy with all the food that’s served at Horton’s, there’s but one dessert on the menu --- a very tart key lime pie, served by the slice, and it was a rather small slice that we got.
The friendly service just can’t be beat. You could not ask for a nicer bunch of people who really want to make sure you’re happy. Combine that with outstanding seafood, and it’s as clear as the chowder that Horton’s deserves the Gold Plate.
Appetizers are in the $2 to $15 price range. Entrees average between $8.50 and $17. Dessert is $4.
