Review: Loaf and Ladle (TV Diner) - The Loaf and Ladle is located on a lane located near downtown Portsmouth, New Hampshire, we could immediately smell the fresh baked breads. The varieties were listed on a chalk board over the food prep area and loaves were stacked for the taking from a tall rack. The charming café offered comfortable seating with views of the quaint street.
Ordering cups of soup to start, we loved the Tomato Bisque with its smooth flavorful base and chunks of tomato partnered with a thick cut of oatmeal bread. The Veggie Vegetable, was just as hearty, with a perfect touch of herbs. The accompanying chunk of French bread was great dunked in the broth!
The spicy black bean burger on our choice of Anadama bread was topped with lettuce, sprouts and red onion. We never missed the meat! Tasty grape jelly slid down the sides of the Peanut Butter Sandwich on whole wheat. The traditional combo of P B and J was impressive, because of the exceptional bread!
A deep layer of whipped cream cheese frosting topped the big piece of carrot cake filled with nuts to make an ordinary dessert extraordinary. And, the peanut butter cookies came in threes. They were soft and chewy-just the way we like them.
Service was prompt and pleasant. Prices were a great value for portions and quality with soups only $3 for a "cup".
The sandwiches were under $6 and tailored to taste with thick breads and fillings.
Desserts were deliciously under $4! This quiet comfortable café offers hospitality, with unpretentious soul satisfying food. Diners can even sample the soups before ordering "just the right one"!
