Review: Providence Oyster Bar

(TV Diner: Providence, Rhode Island) - At first, you'll think this is a small restaurant, but the Providence Oyster Bar extends far back, with a happening bar scene all along the left side.

That's where you can watch the fresh oysters being shucked, and sushi being made. Don't be surprised if you see New England Patriot Jarvis Green.

He's often there, and he's been known to step into the kitchen to learn a thing or two from the chef.

The menu is pretty sophisticated, with very little fried seafood being offered. Instead you'll find lots of grilled swordfish, lobster and shrimp.

For openers, we loved the Roasted Beet Salad accented with nuggets of tangy goat cheese and crispy shallots. The Sea Salt and Pepper Calamari was unbelievably tender, and the cherry pepper dipping sauce put this appetizer over the top tasty!

The Cod Loin Bianco was outstanding, lightly coated with golden bread crumbs for a nice contrast in textures. On the side were Roma tomatoes and spinach that had been sautéed in Champagne!

We also liked the Blackened Atlantic Salmon, a moist thick cut of fish topped with a zesty salsa, served with a wonderful warm orzo and spinach salad. We just had to try the Lobster Mashed Potatoes served with lobster "gravy." An interesting but pricy dish… it sure would have been nice to see a bit of lobster meat as a garnish.

There were only a few desserts offered. The decadent Chocolate Torte had layers of soft mousse and moist cake. The Seasonal Fruit offering was a bit disappointing, just a modest amount of berries and pineapple topped with whipped cream. Thankfully, the well-trained wait staff was topnotch, right there but only when needed.

For its cool ambiance, delicious food, and professional service, the Providence Oyster Bar gets the Gold Plate.
