Review: The Chieftain Pub

(TV Diner) - Since 1995, The Chieftain Pub has been owned and operated by the Cahill family, originally from Waterford, Ireland. Is it the "authentic Irish pub" they claim it to be?

Heading down Route 1 in Plainville, Massachusetts, you may not notice the Chieftain Pub, but step inside this warm and welcoming tavern owned and operated by Irish immigrants Tom and Mary Cahill and you may never pass it by again! From a rustic booth-lined section to a sprawling bar room, this charming spot serving up traditional Irish and American favorites has an energetic feel. But does the grub match the high spirits of the pub?

We start with a robust cup of beef stew, filled with tender meat and vegetables. Perfect with a slice of Mary Cahill's homemade Irish bread. The chicken wings and tenders, mozzarella sticks and jalapeno poppers in the Chieftain platter were nicely battered and fried to a sheen and we couldn't get enough of the honey mustard dipping sauce sitting beside the golden goodies.

On to the bangers and mash - a half-dozen crisp-cased pork sausage links with fresh mashed potatoes and baked beans was hearty fare extraordinaire. Pure delight describes the Chieftain's shepherd's pie. The casserole of ground beef and carrots simmered in gravy, topped by mashed potatoes and baked to a heavenly finish was some of the best comfort food we've ever enjoyed.and that's no blarney.

A slice of pecan pie went down easily with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. But we were disappointed with the pears and fresh whipped cream. The fruit seemed straight from the can and the unsweetened cream was runny.

Service was without fault. Out waitress kept a watchful eye, attending to our every need without hesitation. Value is exceptional at the Chieftain Pub with appetizers averaging $7, entrees from $9 to $15 and desserts $4.95. And we should mention the daily blackboard specials, including steamers and corned beef and cabbage..oh, and there's also live music featuring Irish bands on the weekends.

For its friendly atmosphere, satisfying homemade food and agreeable service, the Chieftain Pub will earn the Gold Plate.

Open Monday through Saturday, the Chieftain Pub is located at 23 Washington Street in Plainville, Massachusetts.
