Review: Tom Can Cook

(TV Diner) - Located on Moody Street in Waltham, Massachusetts, Tom Can Cook serves up a plentiful medley of Asian dishes in a unique and inviting atmosphere. There's a lot to choose from on the menu, so the real question is whether or not Tom can cook!

Taking a central spot along Waltham's Moody Street, Tom Can Cook offers a wide range of Japanese, Korean, Thai and Vietnamese dishes served up in an airy atmosphere, with cool lighting and appealing artwork. There's plenty to choose from his extensive menu, but the question begs to be asked - can Tom cook? Let's find out.

We start with Tom's appetizer platter of shrimp and vegetable dumplings and vegetable tempura. The crunchy, flaky tid-bits were delicate and savory, enhanced further by a light sweet and sour sauce.

An order of Szechuan wings were a slight disappointment. The meaty marinated portions were not crispy enough and the Szechuan sauce a bit bland for our taste.

We decided to kick the heat factor up a notch with the beef hot chili plate. We asked for extra spice in this remarkable stir fry of beef strips and Asian vegetables topped with cashews and the kitchen delivered.

And the tamarind duck was pure delight. The boneless fried half duck with vegetables and pineapple resting in an enticing tamarind sauce was outstanding.

Tom Can Cook offers several sweet endings. In the mood for something light we happily spooned through a creamy serving of coconut ice cream and then were tempted by a cup of fragrant and tender lychee fruit.

Service was on the money. The meal was paced nicely and several members of the wait staff kept a watchful eye on us, always at the ready to be of assistance.

Value is high at Tom Can Cook, with appetizers from $4.50 to $8.95; dinner entrees from $11.95 to $23.95; and desserts from $2.95 to $4.95. The far-ranging bill of fare also features tempura plates, noodle soup bowls, gravy noodles and stir-fried rice dishes.

For its delectable cuisine, substantial menu, suitable service, Tom Can Cook will earn the Gold Plate.

Open daily for lunch and dinner and offering take-out service.
