TV Diner Review: Jimmy's Pub

Calling itself "the best kept secret in Southeastern Massachusetts" Jimmy's Pub and Restaurant located in downtown Mansfield is a family-friendly laid-back eatery, offering seating in either its bustling sports bar or more subdued dining room and featuring a large menu of American, Italian and Greek dishes.

We begin with the Aegean Meze, a bountiful platter of stuffed grape leaves, feta cheese, assorted olives, tabouli, hummus and grilled pita. Enough to feed a family, this distinctive, fresh starter earned high marks. The Greek salad at Jimmy's Pub is a standard mix of lettuce, olives, red onion, pepperoncini, tomatoes, and feta but a liberal sprinkle of Greek oregano made this otherwise ordinary bowl of greens pop.

A signature Monte Cristo sandwich was decadent and delicious. The tantalizing taste of turkey, ham and cheese packed between thick slices of bread, then lightly battered, deep-fried and covered with confectionary sugar was pure delight. What a nice kick a topping of spicy jalapeno garlic butter gave to a fourteen ounce grilled and sliced sirloin. This winner of a zesty steak fired up our appetites for more.

Desserts at Jimmy's Pub are large enough to share, but good enough to want to eat all by yourself. The colossal wedge of moist chocolate cake topped with silky frosting was every cocoa lovers dream. And the equally enormous slice of carrot cake studded with coconut and nuts, then slathered in cream cheese icing was just plain scrumptious.

Our server was warm and capable, checking in throughout the meal in a pleasant unobtrusive manner. There's no question that value is high at Jimmy's Pub and Restaurant with appetizers averaging $9; sandwiches and entrees from $7.50 to $25 and desserts at $6.95.
For its upscale pub grub, good service and relaxed atmosphere, Jimmy's Pub and Restaurant will take the Gold Plate.
