TV Diner review: Local 121

(NECN) - Like the name suggests, Local 121 prides itself on using local resources and serves up ingredients from CT to ME.

Run by State Senator Joshua Miller and his wife, Local 121 is constantly changing their menus with the season. We headed down to get a taste!

Making its place in the Dreyfus Hotel within the theatre district of Providence, Rhode Island, Local 121 is serving locally-raised and harvested foods. Your options are to sit in a luxurious central dining room highlighted by enormous white leather framed mirrors or a smart-looking tap room, rich in dark wood and stained glass.

The root crisps were simply irresistible root crisps, an inventive rendition of golden fried sweet and Yukon Gold potatoes, beets and carrots served with herbed crème fraiche. The white bean and roasted parsnip brandade, however, was a bit on the oily side and its toasted crostini partner too crusty for our liking.

A good and plenty portion of braised pork shank with celery root spaetzle and sautéed spinach was falling-off-the-bone tender this hearty plate of upscale comfort food hit all the right notes.

An herbed goat cheese and ricotta custard tart with corn and leeks was a nice vegetarian offering with a mound of peppery arugula. A well rounded dish but needed an extra spice kick.

Desserts are one third act you won't want to miss at Local 121. A chocolate tart with house made ginger ice cream was rich and intense, upstaged only by an amazing apple crostata with cardamom ice cream and a rum gastrique.

And our efficient and observant server was warm and engaging, happy to answer questions about the eclectic menu.

Value is outstanding at Local 121 with small plates averaging $7; large plates from $11 to $24 and desserts about $7.

We should mention that Local 121 also encompasses the former basement level "speakeasy" of the Dreyfus Hotel, a stylish room that can be booked for private dinner parties or business events.

For its fresh artisinal menu, loyalty to area suppliers and posh atmosphere, Local 121 will earn the Gold Plate.
