First Flakes of the Season Fly in New England

Few more snow showers possible Saturday night

While many take in New England's stunning fall foliage this weekend, Mother Nature has a reminder: winter isn't far off.

The first snow flakes of the season fell in some areas.

On Friday, a trace of sleet was recorded in Caribou, Maine. It's the first wintry precipitation to fall in that area since May 24. If you're counting, that's just 138 days free of snow or ice. The National Weather Service says that's the shortest snow or ice-free stretch on record. Records in Caribou date back to 1939.

On Saturday, snow fell atop New Hampshire's Mount Washington for several hours. It's the first snow of the season atop New England's highest peak, and it's happening far later than usual.

Typically Mt. Washington sees 2.2" of snow in September, but this year the summit didn't even drop below freezing until October. In a typical October, the mountain records nearly 18" of snow.

A warm front will push into New England Saturday night, bringing a few more rain and snow showers to far Northern Maine. Behind that front, temperatures will climb into the 60s and 70s for the rest of the holiday weekend.
