Rain will continue falling Thursday for most of Southern and Central New England, expanding gradually north, with raindrops falling all the way into Southern Canada. Overnight Thursday night, however, colder air slips south, and rain changes to snow for the North Country, building a snowpack in some of Ski Country, and much of snowmobile country for New England.
As for timing, while rain ends Thursday evening and night, south and central, respectively, in New England, snow will fall in the North Country Friday morning through midday, heaviest in mountainous terrain favored by the developing northerly wind. With cold air not only moving in from the north, but also moving in aloft first, higher terrain will see highest snowfall amounts. For instance, the Champlain Valley may only see a half inch of slop, but as you head higher in elevation through Essex, Jericho and eventually Stowe, amounts will increase. Below, I'm including both our own snow forecast map from NECN, but also some guidance to assist in seeing the effect of elevation, and also to note some higher maximum amounts possible in Northern Maine.
