One person was killed when a tree crashed down onto an SUV in the Mystic section of Groton on Tuesday morning while strong storms rolled through the area.

Police said the tree came down onto an SUV that was heading south on Flanders Road, near Route 1. The driver, who was traveling alone, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police have not released the name of the person killed and said they are in the process of notifying family.

"Preliminary indications are it was due to an act of God," said Groton Town Police Chief L.J. Fusaro. "At this point, it's just a very unfortunate issue."
