Cities in Vermont, Maine Set Records for Coldest February

Three cities in Vermont and Maine set records this past month

Three cities in Vermont and Maine set records for the coldest February, while Concord, New Hampshire just barely missed the record.

National Weather Service meteorologists in Maine and Vermont say temperatures across all three northern New England states were well below average last month, but a few get the dubious distinction of being the coldest on record.

Portland, Maine - with an average monthly temperature of 14 degrees - broke the 1979 record of 15.6 degrees.

Rutland, Vermont saw a record cold of 5.2 degrees. The coldest previous February averaged 7.4 in 1934.

Montpelier, Vermont endured its coldest February with an average 5.1 degrees - a full 3 degrees below the 1979 record of 8.1 degrees.

Concord just missed the 1934 record of 12 degrees, coming in at 12.2 degrees.
