New England's Chance to See the Transit of Mercury

The smallest planet in our solar system will cross the sun on Monday

Sunshine returns to the forecast on Monday, just in time for a solar show. The smallest planet in the solar system, Mercury, will pass between Earth and the sun. The entire transit will be visible to New England.

Because Mercury is so small, you’ll need a telescope to view the event. Remember that it’s never safe to look directly at the sun without proper protection, so you’ll need a solar filter.

Between 7 AM and 3 PM you’ll be able to see the planet move across the face of the sun. It will look like a small black dot.

The transit last occurred in 2006, and will next take place in 2019.
