After a rather dull morning with lots of clouds, showers, and even a few thunderstorms moving through New England, some breaks of sunshine will develop around midday. Those breaks of sun will fuel a second round of pop up thunderstorms during the afternoon.
The storms will begin developing after about 1 PM, and will continue to pulse up and down through about sunset. It will be a typical summer afternoon storm threat in that many communities will stay dry, but those towns that do see storms will experience briefly heavy rain, lightning, potentially some small hail, and a brief gust of wind. The biggest hazards today are likely the rain, lightning, and wind aspects of the storm, but most of the boomers that develop will be of the garden variety.
The best chance of seeing a storm stretches from Southern New Hampshire into the Merrimack Valley and Central Massachusetts, and on into Northern Connecticut as well. The odds of seeing a storm are lowest on the Cape and Islands, meaning you will likely be able to squeeze out a few beach hours there.
This is sort of our transition day, as we shift into a muggy and hot pattern this week. More afternoon storms are likely Monday and Tuesday as highs climb to near 90.
