A surge of chilly air got the job done and turned rain showers to snow showers in the mountains and high terrain of New England late Sunday into this morning, dropping as much as an astounding four inches of snow in some of Vermont, and accumulating snow to many high-terrain communities of Western and Northern New England.

The vast majority of us didn't wake to fresh snow, but will see brisk and breezy conditions with sun and clouds as high temperatures struggle to get beyond 60 and westerly wind gusts to 35 mph make it feel more like 50-55.

After a cool night of increasing clouds, expect Tuesday to bring mostly cloudy skies to Central and Southern New England with a few sprinkles or light rain showers possible from midday onward, but high temperatures still reaching the 60s.

Wednesday should bring a sea breeze to the coastline but fair conditions, regionwide, before a warming trend sets in Thursday through Saturday.

Showers return to the forecast late Saturday or Saturday night, but the weekend, at least at this early juncture, appears good, overall, with highs in the 70s.

The mild stretch of weather continues through most of next week, and though an increasing chance of showers and thunder appears to arrive for the Memorial Day weekend, that's still a long way out, so we'll see how things transpire.
