Red Line Experiences 'Severe Delays' Due to Power Problem



    Heavy rain posed problems Wednesday morning for commuters who rely on taking the MBTA to work. (Published Wednesday, Sept. 30, 2015)

    Just in time for the afternoon commute, the MBTA experienced "severe delays" on the Red Line due to a power problem.

    The MBTA said power had to be shut off around 4 p.m. Wednesday after smoke was detected in the electrical power system in the tunnel section between South Station and Broadway.

    Service was temporarily suspended between Park Street and JFK and passengers were let off. Service was restored around 5:15 p.m.

    Commuters were understandably perturbed by the delays given what they had to endure last winter, and many of them tweeted out frustrated messages complaining about the public transportation service.

    It was the second time today that power issues were reported on the Red Line. Earlier in the day some trains on the Red and Green lines had no lights, but MBTA spokesman Joe Pesaturo said service did not have to be suspended.

    Flooding also caused problems Wednesday morning along the MBTA's Worcester commuter line. All inbound trains were forced to switch to the outbound tracks, which were not covered in water.

    Pesaturo said there were also minor issues of water getting into the Downtown Crossing station earlier on Wednesday.
