Touch of Winter, Lots of Rain Ahead

    NEWSLETTERS

Showers to a steady rain. Some heavy rain later. Snow in Northern Maine. Temperatures in the 30s-40s. (Published Monday, Nov. 28, 2016)

Two systems will impact New England this week. The first arrives on Tuesday.

Rain will begin to overspread the region from west to east during the morning. While plain rain will fall in much of southern New England, just enough chilly air may be in place for a few pockets of freezing rain in the valleys of north central Massachusetts, parts of central and northeastern Vermont and parts of Central New Hampshire. In these areas, a freezing rain advisory is in effect for parts of the Tuesday morning commute, as a few slick spots may develop.

That cold air, and any areas of freezing rain, will retreat during the day as milder air flows in with heavier rain. The rain will continue to fall heavily at times right through the evening commute across much of New England, including the Boston area. Expect slowdowns on the roads.

The only exception to all of this is in far Northern Maine where this precipitation will fall as snow, accumulating on the order of several inches. A winter weather advisory is in effect.

We'll get a break Wednesday morning before Round 2 moves in Wednesday afternoon with more rain. That will continue into Thursday morning. Like Round 1, most of us will see plain rain out of this, with snow in northern Maine.

When it's all said and done this week, most of us will see one to two inches of needed rainfall. Isolated higher amounts will be found, especially in southern New England. In northern Maine, on the snowy side, totals will approach a foot for some.

Winds will also be gusty at the coast. Expect some gusts in the range of 40-50 mph at times.
