In wake of the summer warmth back in New England, NECN meteorologist Joe Joyce gathered some information about how to protect yourself against extreme sun and heat.

Light clothing, hats, and sunglasses are recommended, in addition to sunblock. Doctors say that getting sunburns when you’re young more than doubles your chance of getting skin cancer later in life.

“Buy not just one tube of sunscreen, but several and place them in positions in your house where it’d going to be accessible,” suggested Dr. Robin Travers, a dermatologist.

Hot weather is one of the leading weather-related killers in the United States, resulting in hundreds of deaths each year. The key to avoid heat-related illness is to slow down, stay out of the mid-day sun, find air conditioning, and drink water.
