Whipping Winds for Many, Winter Weather Advisory for Some

UPDATE: As of 9 PM, a Winter Weather Advisory has been issued for southern Vermont and the Berkshires in Massachusetts.

Expect 3-6 inches of snow above 1,500 feet in elevation and 1-3 inches below. Roads have already become snow covered, including Route 9 in Vermont. Considering we haven’t seen leaf drop yet, in addition to 50 MPH wind gusts power outages may be scattered to widespread.

Earlier story below:

Tis’ the season for snow! The first flakes flying in the higher elevations of Massachusetts, Vermont and New Hampshire. It’s difficult to get snow to stick this time of year. The ground temperatures are well above freezing and most of the area received a significant rainfall on Saturday.

At just over 2,000 feet, Peru, Massachusetts was one of the first locations in the Berkshires to whiten the ground. This picture was captured at 5:30 PM.

If you live above 1,500 feet you can expect several inches of snow overnight (and into Sunday morning).

Valley locations will be warm enough to see all rain and the additional rain we receive won’t be enough to produce any more flooding.

Winds will be a concern through Sunday evening. Gusts will exceed 50 MPG for the Cape and Islands and the higher elevations of Vermont and Massachusetts. 40 MPH gusts are likely for the remainder of coastal New England. For the rest of interior New England 30 MPH are possible. With the recent rain, which likely loosened up the tree roots and the stressed and drought weakened trees --- these winds may cause isolated to scattered power outages. Winds will diminish by 6 PM Sunday.
