Boston Doctor, Mayor Menino Warn of Extreme Heat, Poor Air Quality

(NECN: Greg Wayland, Boston) – On top of the heat, we’ve got poor air quality.

People in Boston are seeking relief anyway they can. The most successful at that have been the very young.

Beware of the extreme heat, says Dr. Jonathan Olshaker.

“The heat is very dangerous,” he says. “It can kill you in a small number of cases.”

Boston Mayor Tom Menino says to wear light clothes and to not do any excessive exercise.

The Mayor also says to check on any elderly neighbors.

Poor air quality is especially dangerous for people with underlying health conditions such as asthma.

Dr. Olshaker says absolutely stay in air-conditioned spaces and avoid, if at all possible, going outside.

Heat strike is a life-threatening problem, he says.

“It can happen from activity. It’s happened often to elderly people who are inside but in spaces that are not air conditioned.”

You should avoid caffeine, colas and coffee because it only makes you lose fluid.

“Drink plenty of water,” Mayor Menino says.
