Boston Globe: Hurricane Deals Fatal Blow

(NECN) - Gene Ratner spent much of the past decade trying to stave off the steady advance of erosion near his four-bedroom home on Nantucket. But his efforts to persuade town officials to build a berm were, in the end, as futile as the sandbags piled between the beach and his front door.

Yesterday, after the coup de grce came this month in the form of Hurricane Earl, the retired 84-year-old developer watched as a massive backhoe ripped through the roof, through the support beams, and into what was left of the foundation, smashing the old house into a pile of rubble.
