Cumberland River Crests, Begins to Recede in Tennessee

(NECN/CNN) - Karl Dean, the Mayor of Nashville, Tennessee, held a news conference this afternoon to update the public on flooding in the city.

The Cumberland River, which has submerged parts of Nashville, has crested and begun to recede.

The flooding caused by torrential rain over the weekend has already claimed 18 lives in Tennessee, including 10 in Nashville.

The flooding prompted election officials to delay Nashville's local primary, which had been set for today.

Damage estimates range into the tens of millions of dollars.

The weekend storms also killed six people in Mississippi and four in Kentucky. One person was killed by a tornado in western Tennessee.
