Fire, Flooding Evacuations Underway in Scituate, Mass.

(NECN: Tom Langford, Scituate, Mass.) - Two homes are on fire on 7th Avenue in Scituate, Massachusetts.

It looks like it will be a total loss for these two homes. Everyone inside the homes has been evacuated safely.

A powerful East Coast blizzard has left behind major flooding in this South Shore town. Water was about three feet higher than it normally would have been. Standing water remains.

The weather service says the flooding is caused by strong onshore winds and 20-25 foot waves during the high tide.

Basements are being pumped out; low-lying areas are being pumped out.

Officials are urging anyone who does not have to drive to stay off roads in the region.

Residents seeking emergency shelter can go to the local high school. There is plenty of food and warmth there.
