Floods, Landslides Kill Dozens in Central China

(NECN: China) - Life is miserable for millions of people right now in Central China.

Torrential rains have forced authorities to open flood gates on the giant Three Gorges Dam, as near-record volumes of water churn down the Yangtze River, putting the year-old dam to its first major test.

Landslides and flooding have killed at least 37 people in two provinces, Sechuan and Shaanxi. Dozens remain unaccounted for.

The Ministry of Civil Affairs says that the death toll from summer storms stood at 146 with another 40 people missing as of Friday, a tally certain to rise as flooding continues.
