Hurricane Karl Strengthens, Takes Aim at Mexican Gulf Coast

(NECN/Televisa: Veracruz, Mexico) - Hurricane Karl has rapidly intensified in the last 24 hours over the Bay of Campeche and is currently a Category 3 major hurricane with winds up to 120 mph.

Landfall is expected over the Mexican state of Veracruz, approximately 37miles north of the city of Veracruz, around 2:00 p.m. local time this afternoon.

Karl is expected to intensify further to a Category 4 with sustained winds of 140mph before landfall.

This has prompted the closure of Gulf of Mexico oil facilities and the storm could strengthen further before hitting near the country's largest power plant.
