Many Looking Forward to Winter Activities in Worcester, Mass.

(NECN: Katelyn Tivnan) - Isabella Garza is lacing up her first pair of ice skates at the Worcester, Mass. common oval.

Her family is here from Oklahoma visiting relatives for the holidays, and are trying to take advantage of all the outdoor activities they can while in town.

"We went sledding, built snowmen, all the winter activities outside, trying to get them up to Mount Wachusett too," Bob Rotti says.

The oval will be open to public skaters all weekend. There will also be a number of events including a curling demonstration on Sunday followed by a hands on lesson.

"You don't need to put on skates so if you want to try out the oval this is the way to do it," Colleen Bamford says.

Sunday, skaters will also get the chance to see Mrs. Clause and her ice skating elf.

"She'll be taking pictures handing out candy canes and you can tell her any last minute messages for Santa," Bamford says.

Santa will be nearby in Princeton Sunday, flying by helicopter to Wachusett Mountain. It's part of their Polar Express celebration for kids. Fresh snow is also bringing a lot of eager skiers to the mountain.

"As soon as it hits below 32, our snow guns are running and with warm temps going to be mild and plenty of base going to be a terrific time to come skiing," owner Carolyn Stimpson says.

The mountain also offers cross country skiing, as well as hiking for the family.

Back on the oval, Isabella is mastering one winter sport at a time.

"Is it hard? Kinda, but once you get used to it, it gets easier," Garza says.
