Multiple Warnings in Effect on Cape Cod as Storm Hits New England

(NECN: Justin Michaels - Chatham, Mass./AP) - Heavy snow and winds are beginning to hit Cape Cod and the islands as a storm moves up the Atlantic coast Wednesday morning.

There is a high wind warning, a blizzard warning and coastal warning in effect for the area. The high wind morning is expected to last from 5:00 Wednesday until 8:00 Wednesday evening.

The National Weather service says there could be 25+ foot seas and urges all mariners to get back on land.

The storm began heading up the Interstate 95 corridor Tuesday, dropping snowflakes onto Washington, D.C.'s budding cherry trees and dusting government buildings in northern Virginia before moving on.

The biggest impact is expected Wednesday when 5 to 10 inches of snow is forecast for Cape Cod, Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard in Massachusetts. On Maine's eastern tip, Hancock and Washington counties could get 8 to 16 inches of snow.

Electric utility NStar was reporting about 400 outages on the Cape.
