(NECN/KION) - A section of highway 1, near Big Sur, California is shut down indefinitely. Police say a 40-foot section of the two-lane highway crumbled into the sea and fell hundreds of feet down a cliff.
"One of the things that is certain is that we have to keep this entire area blocked off," said William Perlstein with the California Highway Patrol.
It'll be blocked off for weeks, even months. It's a reality for people who travel down this road daily to come to grasp with.
Residents and travelers trying to get through were forced to turn around. Some of them just parked their car on the side and just walked right on through just to get home.
