Preview: 2013 Hurricane Season

(NECN) - Just two days into hurricane season and we're already getting a serious alert from a local expert about what New Englanders should be bracing for.

Hydrologist-in-Charge of the Northeast River Forecast Center, David Vallie says this year is going to be a highly active hurricane season.

He says there will be above-average sea surface temperatures.

“Warmer Atlantic, more storms, bigger storms, guaranteed,” said Vallie.

Wind shear is projected to be weak this season, meaning tropical disturbances could intensify under these conditions.

Last year’s hurricane season had 19 named storms, 10 hurricanes and one major hurricane.
NOAA’s forecast is for 13-20 named storms, 7-11 hurricanes and 3-6 major hurricanes.

Vallie said that many factors need to be taken into consideration, including possessions, escape plan should a hurricane hit, and more.
