Red Cross Mobilizing in Response to Tenn. Flood Threats

(NECN: Katie Daly: Worcester, Mass.) - The Worcester Red Cross is mobilizing tonight to go to Tennessee to respond to floods expected as a result of the cresting of the Mississippi River near Memphis.

The Worcester contingent will be among the 5,000 volunteers expected to descend on the city that's home to Elvis Presley's mansion, Graceland. The Presley estate is on high enough ground to escape the flooding, but residents in low-lying areas near the river have been evacuated, and many of their houses are under water, leaving them homeless.

The Red Cross is rounding up teams of volunteers to help throughout the South, which was heavily hit by killer tornadoes just over a week ago. The volunteers are expected to be needed for months.
