Residents Hide in Hills After Tsunami Hits Indonesia

(NECN/CNN) - Rescue workers are scrambling to save lives in a week that saw two separate but deadly disasters.

One on the island of Java, the other, on Sumatra's West Coast.

One of those disasters was the eruption of the volatile Mount Merapi.

Just 24 hours before that first eruption another disaster was unfolding about 1300 kilometers away.

A massive earthquake triggered a tsunami that killed more than 340 people off the coast of Sumatra.

Hundreds more are missing and thousands have been displaced.

CNN's Paula Hancocks managed to reach the hard-hit Mentawai Islands.
