Traffic, Icy Roads Make Travel Messy on Last Day of Holiday Weekend

(NECN: Nicole Jacobs, Natick, Mass.) - The traffic is finally starting to thin out along the Massachusetts Turnpike following a busy holiday return day Sunday.

"We went to the aquarium in Boston," said David Blackborn, who was stuck in traffic. "Then we realized on the way home that it was going to be really busy coming home."

"We've been on the road for two hours, just coming out of Natick," said Jerome Riley.

Hitting the road after a long holiday weekend can turn a short trip into hours of seeing red - gridlock in some cases - where the concept of packing patience is an understatement.

"Humility," said Riley. "There's a lot of road rage."

According to AAA, an estimated three million motorists traveled over the Thanksgiving holiday, incorporating the busiest travel day of the year.

With an unexpected Sunday morning mess, 65 vehicles and three tractor trailers had a tough, slippery go of it on I-290 in Worcester. Mother Nature caused the bumper car scene that shut down both sides for hours, leading to even longer hours sitting and waiting.
