GOP Mayoral Candidate Drops Out, Backs Democratic Opponent

Dr. Daniel Harrop, a candidate for mayor in Providence, RI, announced the decision on Facebook

The Republican candidate for mayor of Providence, Rhode Island, announced he's dropped out of the race the evening before voters headed to the polls.

Dr. Daniel Harrop made the announcement Monday on his Facebook page, stating that he was voting for Democratic Judge Jorge Elorza to prevent voters from splitting votes between three candidates and out of a concern for corruption with two-time felon and independent candidate Buddy Cianci.

"While I understand that some will still chose to vote for me, as is their right, I have decided that, personally, I need to do all I can to stop Mr. Cianci," Harrop said in his statement on Facebook, adding, “Some issues, some elections, are so important they need to rise above petty partisan politics. This Mayoral election is one such circumstance."

Harrop recently gave a $1,000 donation to Elorza's campaign.

Cianci served more than four years in prison for corruption charges.
