‘Thoroughly Modern Millie' at Reagle Music Theatre

A regional theater company that's been a fixture of the community since 1969 is back for another summer of Broadway musicals.

Reagle Music Theatre of Greater Boston has a reputation for delivering high-quality shows. This month, it's transporting audiences back to the jazz age with the tap dancing, flappers, and madcap story line of "Thoroughly Modern Millie." The high-energy show, which captured the Tony Award for Best Musical in 2002, is now winning over audiences in Waltham, Massachusetts.

"The talent here is incredible, so the music really really comes to life," said director Cindy Thole.

Thole is a Broadway veteran and no stranger to the Reagle stage. She has worked closely with Reagle's founder and producing artistic director, Robert Eagle, for years to bring memorable shows to Waltham High School's Robinson Theater.

"It's very good for a high school," Eagle said.

Eagle, a retired teacher, has worked tirelessly through the years to improve the space by adding stage flooring, an orchestra pit, and updated lighting. The 80-year-old's keen eye for detail has led to the theater acquiring an impressive costume collection, including from the original Broadway productions of "Hello Dolly" and "Thoroughly Modern Millie." But perhaps most special is the theater company's blend of professional and amateur talent.

"Theater is a collaborative process, and it's so wonderful working with the combination that Bob has created, the community, the non-professionals, and the pros," Thole said.

It's an endeavor that has lasted 48 years with a steadfast presence behind the scenes.

"It's my life love," said Eagle.

"Thoroughly Modern Millie" is at Reagle Music Theatre through Sunday, July 17. It stars "American Idol" Season 11 contestant Gabi Carrubba. Tickets start at $35. For more information, click here.
