Bear Prompts Lockdown of Rhode Island Middle School

The school was locked down at around 8:30 a.m. after the bear was spotted wandering the property

A Rhode Island middle school was placed in lockdown when a bear was spotted wandering school grounds.

School officials say Hope Highlands Middle School in Cranston went into lockdown as a precaution at about 8:30 a.m. Monday.

Students were already inside for the day and there were no reports of encounters between the bear and students or staff.

Ray Votto, chief operating officer of Cranston public schools, tells The Providence Journal that he's worked in the system along time and this is the first time a bear has caused a lockdown.
