Boston Marathon Runners Raise Record $38.7 Million in 2019

This year's fundraising even surpassed totals from 2014 when the field expanded to allow more people to run after the 2013 bombings

Boston Marathon runners raised a record $38.7 million for 297 charitable organizations this year.

That's $300,000 more than 2014, when the field expanded to 36,000 people to accommodate those who wanted to run in the year after the finish line bombings.

The 2019 fundraising total was a marked $2 million, six percent, increase from 2018 total, according to the Boston Athletic Association.

Most of the money was raised through Boston Athletic Association and John Hancock programs that provide nonprofit groups with entries to the race. They provide bibs to athletes who agree to raise funds for the organization.

“We are immensely proud to be associated with the athletes and organizations participating in our charity programs,” B.A.A. CEO Tom Grilk said in a statement. “Each dollar raised through these athletes will have a profound impact on our communities.”

Over the past 30 years, B.A.A. and John Hancock's programs have raised more than $372 million for community-based organizations.
