Authorities are investigating the death of an inmate in Vermont.
The Department of Corrections says 59-year-old Anthony Nichols was pronounced dead Saturday morning at the Southern State Correctional Facility in Springfield. State police said an autopsy will be performed and that the death does not appear suspicious.
The correction department's health services director will conduct an administrative and clinical review. Vermont State Police also are investigating according to standard protocol.
Nichols, who was charged with sexual assault, had been detained since January 2018 after not posting bail.
