Woman Injured After Jumping From Window to Escape Fire

April Melendy, who lives on the second floor, reportedly jumped from a second-story window

A woman was injured after jumping from a second-story window to escape a fire in her apartment building on Sunday morning.

State police arrived at 1171 Quimby Mountain Road in Sharon, Vermont, just after 4:30 a.m. Sunday morning after receiving reports of a fire. They found that an enclosed porch on the second-story of the apartment building was on fire, and it was spreading to the building itself.

The tenants of each of the building's three apartment units — six tenants in total — were home at the time of the fire, officials said. The tenants on the first floor were able to easily evacuate, while April Melendy, who lives on the second floor, reportedly jumped from a second-story window.

Melendy suffered a lower-body injury in the process. Her exact condition is not known at this time. No other injuries were reported in the fire.

The apartment building itself sustained extensive fire damage, officials said.

An initial investigation shows that all of the apartments have smoke detectors. The exact cause of the fire remains under investigation, but it does not appear to be suspicious, officials said.
