Somerville Considering Appealing Wynn Casino Permit

The suburban Boston city has until Aug. 22 to decide whether to appeal the waterfront permit in Superior Court

Somerville, Massachusetts, Mayor Joseph Curtatone says city officials are strongly considering an appeal of the state's approval of a key environmental permit for the forthcoming $2.1 billion Wynn Resorts casino.

The Boston Globe reports the suburban Boston city has until Aug. 22 to decide whether to appeal the waterfront permit in Superior Court.

Curtatone says his goal has never been to stop the Everett casino, but rather mitigate its potential negative effects on the environment.

Somerville initially appealed the state Department of Environmental Protection's decision to issue the permit earlier this year, but DEP Commissioner Martin Suuberg gave final approval for the permit late last month.

The permit calls for Wynn to preserve more than six acres of open space at the site.

A Wynn spokesman declined to comment.
