Vt. AG: Fantasy Sports Sites Illegal in State

Companies like Draft Kings and Fan Duel have been booming in recent years

A top lawyer with the Vermont attorney general's office is telling lawmakers that daily fantasy sports games offered online are illegal in the state.

And John Treadwell, chief of the criminal division at the attorney general's office, is urging against passage of a bill that would regulate the games.

Companies like Draft Kings and Fan Duel have been booming in recent years by allowing players to pick fantasy teams and awarding prizes based on the performance of individual athletes.

Sen. Kevin Mullin, the Republican chairman of the Senate Economic Development Committee, says he thinks the activity should be legal in Vermont.

Debate centers on whether the games are ones of chance or skill.
