Chief Executives' Club: NBA Commissioner Adam Silver

(NECN) - Adam Silver, who became the NBA's commissioner in February, addressed the Chief Executives' Club of Boston at Boston College.

Introduced by Boston Celtics owner Wyc Grousebeck, Silver talked about what he hopes to accomplish in his new role.

"It's probably my first formal address as commissioner of the NBA," said Silver. "Seeing that this is a CEO club, only a little more than a month ago, I wouldn't have been eligible to be here."

Silver explained his past with the NBA, of which he has been a member for 22 years in six different positions. He discussed the importance the league places on promoting basketball around the world.

"For all those kids I see around the world playing basketball, and, frankly, most of the kids you see in the United States seeing basketball, most of them will never, ever get to see an NBA game in person. In fact, hardly any of our fans ever actually attend a game," said Silver. "One of my goals, as commissioner, is to use innovation, all the latest technology, to try to capture that courtside experience, which I firmly believe, and with all due respect to the other sports owners in the room, is one of the best tickets in all of sports, and maybe for any form of entertainment."

Silver also delved into the world of advanced analytics.

"I'm sure big data is transforming your businesses. It's transforming basketball, as well. As a league, we're enormously excited about how analytics can help make the intangibles of the sport a little bit more tangible, to enhance our GMs' roster decisions, our coaches' strategies, and our fans' appreciations of what they're seeing on the court," said Silver. "Every NBA arena today has six specially designed cameras installed in the rafters. This technology, called "Sportview," allows us to capture, splice and analyze every moment of every game. It gives us a whole new universe of statistics - not just blocked shots, but altered shots, shooting percentages on pull-up shots versus layups, not just rebounding, but rebounding chances."
