CEO Corner: How BCBSs Smartphone App Improves Health Care

(NECN) - Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts is working to empower its 3 million members to be smarter, more cost-conscious consumers of health care services in the hopes of holding down the growth in costs.

That even includes developing a smartphone application that can show the relative cost of providers of common medical procedures and services.

CEO Andrew Dreyfus stopped by this week’s edition of CEO Corner to talk about what BCBS MA is doing to make health care expenditures more transparent to everyone involved in the system, and what goes into providing “quality rankings” that doctors, hospital administrators and insurers can agree are fair and accurate.

The year Dreyfus became CEO, BCBS MA was losing $150 million per year; last year, it swung to a $136 million gain. So how did Dreyfus and his team accomplish that turnaround?

Dreyfus also looks ahead to how health insurance and health care will and will not change in Massachusetts assuming the Affordable Care Act, also known as ObamaCare, remains law in 2013.
