Maine Mill to Close Before Year’s End

A Maine mill with nearly 200 jobs says it's closing by year's end.

Expera Specialty Solutions in Old Town said Tuesday that market conditions are to blame, with a weak Canadian dollar and excess pulp capacity depressing prices. At the same time, Maine wood prices have not dropped.

Officials said the mill will close by the end of December.

Democratic Sen. Jim Dill of Old Town says the shutdown and loss of nearly 200 jobs is "a huge economic blow for our region, and devastating news to the mill's workers and their families."

The news comes a day after another mill, Lincoln Pulp and Tissue, filed for bankruptcy. The operator hopes the Lincoln mill will auctioned within 45 days.
