Rhode Island's First Sonic Opening in August

The drive-in restaurant is expected to open at the end of August

Rhode Island is set to get its first Sonic fast food restaurant this summer.

According to WJAR-TV, the restaurant will open its first Rhode Island location on Route 44 in Smithfield around Aug. 31. A groundbreaking ceremony is scheduled for July 15.

The drive-in chain currently has more than 3,500 restaurants in the United States, including several in Massachusetts and Connecticut.

The Oklahoma-based company has said it is looking to expand its presence in New England. It announced in March that it plans to add 40 restaurants in the Greater Boston area within the next five years or so.
