2 Maine Students Diagnosed With Meningitis

School district officials in southern Maine say two students have been diagnosed with meningitis.

Superintendent Steven Connolly said Wednesday evening that the students attend Vivian E. Hussey Primary School and Noble Middle School in Berwick.

Connolly says one child has viral meningitis.

The test results on the second student are still pending and Connolly declined to be more specific about which student had viral meningitis. He says the students live in different towns and apparently do not know each other.

The state Center for Disease Control and Prevention told School Administrative District 60 there is no need for major concern.

Connolly says staff is cleaning common areas, bathrooms, faucets and drinking fountains more often. He says there is no reason to believe the two cases were contracted in school.
