Every 67 seconds someone in the United States develops Alzheimer's.

Researchers in New England are working diligently to combat the disease. Great strides have been made in terms of medication research.

Doctor Robert Stern, of Boston University's Alzheimer's Disease Center, joined NECN to discuss the epidemic.

Over 5.2 million Americans currently have the dementia from the disease.

"One out of every two or three people age 85 and older have the disease. It is going to be devastating in the years to come," Stern said.

Stern says his research study has an abundance of new drugs that can help fight the disease. The lack of study participants has slowed potential research outbreaks.
