Participants in the Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program are going to get more bang for their buck when they shop at farmers markets.
Starting June 15, more than 30 farmers markets in Maine will offer incentives to SNAP customers to encourage them to buy more fruits and vegetables as part of an effort to promote healthier eating.
Leigh Hallet, executive director of the Maine Federation of Farmers' Markets in Pittsfield, says SNAP shoppers will receive discounts, "bonus bucks" or something similar they can put toward fruits and vegetables.
The effort is being funded through a more than $31 million grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
Over the next three years, farmers markets will receive $200,000.
