Officials: Tobacco Sales to Youth Up in NH

New Hampshire heath officials say the percentage of retailers selling cigarettes to children increased slightly last year

New Hampshire heath officials say the percentage of retailers selling cigarettes to children increased slightly last year.

Nearly 300 retailers across the state were surveyed in 2014 as part of a federal compliance check program. The state Department of Health and Human Services says the violation rate increased 1 percent to just under 13 percent last year, showing the state still has work to do in checking identification for tobacco products.

The most recent Youth Risk Behavior Survey found that 86 percent of high school students did not smoke cigarettes in the last 30 days. Officials say that reflects well on the education and enforcement efforts of the state's tobacco prevention program and the Division of Liquor Enforcement.
