Boston Strangler: The Mood of the City Back Then

(NECN: Greg Wayland) - The Boston Strangler killings gripped the city at the time, putting many residents in a state of fear and alert.

Hollywood had its take on that lurid 2-year drama in the Hub, whose last act found 19-year-old Mary Sullivan dead in a Charles Street walk-up.

"Albert and my dad in a strange way kind of became pen pals," John DiNatale, son of a Boston Strangler investigator, says. DiNatale has also produced a documentary on the Strangler.

Detective Phil DiNatale died in 1987 at age 67, and he saved everything - newspapers clippings, journals, audio tapes - material now transformed into the documentary called "Stranglehold".

"Back then, even our own personal family was in an uproar. I mean, everybody was afraid to answer the phone, women were afraid to go out at night," DiNatale says.
