Developing: Surf Kills Fisherman in Gloucester, Mass.

(NECN: Gloucester, Mass.) - Gloucester Mayor Carolyn Kirk says high surf is to blame for the death of a man who was swept into the water near Braces Cove Tuesday.

The man, whose name was not released, was reportedly fishing on the rocks near the cove when he was knocked into the water. The Coast Guard was able to rescue him, but paramedics were not able to revive him. Rescuers were also called to another scene in the Magnolia section of Gloucester, and lifeguards had to pull an estimated dozen swimmers from the water earlier in the day.

Officials are monitoring beaches and advising swimmers to go no further than waist deep in the water, because of the dangerous currents.
