Helping Kids Cope Through Times of Tragedy

(NECN) - How can families cope when the unimaginable becomes an immediate reality for children?

Dr. David Langer has some insight. He's a professor with the Child and Adolescent Program at Boston University

He said the shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn. were a tragedy, and it’s hard to believe it’s already been six months.

He said after a tragedy, younger kids may not be able to understand tragedy, and may show difficulty expressing themselves.

Older kids may act out or express themselves in inappropriate ways, such as drug use and illegal activities.

He said after a tragedy, it’s important to balance listening and answering questions, as to not give a child more information than needed.
